The strangest viral food trends are often found on social media sites and make you wonder if they are real or simply made up to gain attention.
There isn’t any limit to what you can find on the internet, which is both a good and bad thing. Sure, you can find instructions on how to do various tasks, but you’ll also find some interesting items, such as the strangest food trends that have been shared on TikTok and other social media platforms. Here are just a few of the trends that have gained attention over the past few years.
Cottage cheese and mustard diet
Many diets have included cottage cheese as one of the items eaten to ensure dieters can get their calcium intake. It seems people who desire to lose weight will try anything though. One woman claims to have lost 80 pounds eating cottage cheese and mustard. She doesn’t exclusively eat these two items, but dips everything in them, which seems crazy. There are health benefits to both of these items, but they don’t necessarily promote a balanced diet or sound very enticing together.
Watertok gone crazy
The hashtag “WaterTok was created, and the goal was to get internet users to drink more water, which is a necessary source of hydration and health in our lives. Some people don’t enjoy the taste of plain water and want to jazz it up a bit, but in one of the strangest viral food trends ever, people were adding so many things to their water that the drink became filled with preservatives and additives, which can diminish the hydration benefits of water.
Pickle in a blanket
For those who love pickles, this could be the ultimate guilty pleasure snack. This became a viral snack, and it’s pretty simple to create. It’s simply a pickle wrapped in a slice of cheese and then fried to give it the crispy outer shell. This makes for a great snack for anyone looking for a salty treat, but it’s hard to show restraint. The pickle in a blanket apparently pairs well with a martini, but the fried cheese part of this snack could be a heart-stopper if you have too many.
Cowboy candy
The combinations of sweet and spicy or sweet and savory are well-loved, but maybe TikTok has taken it too far. One of the strangest viral food trends is taking candied jalapenos, called cowboy candy, and adding them to just about everything. They can be added to toast, tacos, salads, or any dish you want. The combination of a spicy pepper with caramelized sugar might not sound good to some, but for others, it adds the perfect garnish to a meal, making it even more enjoyable.
Watermelon fries
The only strange thing about this dish is the way the pieces of watermelon are cut. Instead of simply slicing the delicious fruit, some on TikTok have gone to cutting int in a crinkle cut shape, much like French fries, and adding a bit of yogurt dip to the mix. This gives you a different texture, which is trending and popular, despite not being a strange dish. Still, calling a piece of fruit a fry, when there’s nothing fried about it, seems a bit odd.
Jell-O salads
Although this is one of the strangest food trends, it isn’t something that went viral on TikTok but became popular in the early part of the new century. For some reason, people were convinced they should put different foods together with Jell-O, which makes almost no sense at all. Many of us probably remember vegetable dishes and meat items suspended in these jiggly molds. Jell-O doesn’t belong with these items, but some people thought it was a great trend and brought these strange concoctions out for their family get-togethers.
Bacon, bacon, and more bacon
Another food trend from the early part of the new century was adding bacon to everything. Despite this tasty, salty meat being great as part of breakfast, people were pairing bacon with nearly every food item they could think of. This meant bacon on donuts, ice cream, and other crazy items that you wouldn’t normally put bacon on. Like the fried pickles wrapped in cheese, adding bacon to everything could be extremely bad for your health, especially when you eat too much of it.
These are just a few of the strangest viral food trends that have been enjoyed over the past few years, many of which have been featured on TikTok. Which of these food trends have you fallen prey to?
